Welcome to Switch to Nature
Creating inclusive environments where people feel seen, supported, and able to succeed has been the driving force behind my career and it is the very same force behind Switch to Nature.
I am Ricki Hewitt, the founder and voice behind this blog. I am an advice and support, mental health, and inclusion professional with over eight years of experience across higher education, healthcare, and the voluntary sector. Everything I write here is shaped by that experience, and by a deep belief that nature-based wellbeing should be accessible to every single person not just a privileged few.
Who Is Behind Switch to Nature?nature-based wellbeing
Meet Ricki Hewitt Founder and Author
I have spent over eight years working across universities, healthcare services, and community organisations, supporting people with disabilities, neurodivergence, mental health conditions, and complex personal circumstances. My work has always centred on holistic pastoral care, safeguarding, casework, and tailored support helping people not just cope, but genuinely thrive.
My professional expertise spans:
• Disability support and reasonable adjustments
• Mental health interventions and safeguarding
• Equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDIB)
• Widening participation and community engagement
• LGBT+ inclusion and organisational culture change
• Evidence-based, person-centred support practice
I have led projects and initiatives focused on accessibility, student engagement, and systemic culture change and I bring that same commitment to everything I publish on Switch to Nature.
Why I Created Switch to Nature
A Blog Born From Professional Experience and Personal Conviction
Throughout my career, one thing became increasingly clear: the people who needed rest, restoration, and reconnection the most were often the ones with the least access to it. Nature based wellbeing is too frequently presented as something reserved for a specific type of person and that needed to change.
I started Switch to Nature to challenge that narrative. This blog is my way of taking the inclusive, evidence informed practice I have built throughout my career and applying it to the world of nature, wellbeing, and holistic living. Because I believe that switching to nature should never feel out of reach no matter who you are, where you live, or what you are going through.
What Switch to Nature Is About

• Mental health and nature based wellbeing
• Accessible and inclusive outdoor experiences
• Neurodivergence, disability, and connecting with nature
• Mindfulness, grounding, and holistic living
• Community belonging and widening participation
• Practical, down to earth guidance for a more nature connected life
Whether you are managing a mental health challenge, living with a disability, or simply feeling disconnected from yourself and the world around you this space was built with you in mind.
Our Mission
Inclusive, Accessible, and Nature-Centred Wellbeing
My mission with Switch to Nature is simple: to make nature based wellbeing feel real, relevant, and genuinely accessible to all.
What motivates me most is helping create spaces where people from underrepresented and marginalised backgrounds are not only supported, but truly empowered to thrive. Whether through individual stories, evidence informed insights, or practical guidance, I write to ensure that wellness content reflects the full, rich diversity of human experience.
Switch to Nature is committed to:
• Publishing content that is honest, compassionate, and evidence informed
• Amplifying perspectives that mainstream wellness spaces too often overlook
